Update on Phillies Care Packages for Troops

Posted by Brian Michael, Thu, September 16, 2010 04:31 PM

For those of you who haven’t heard, we’re collecting donations so that we can send fun Phillies gear to fans serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. In less than a month, we’ve had 30 people and companies donate over $750.

This past week we plowed through a mountain of customs forms, Post Office boxes, tape and newspapers to stuff 15 carepackages for soldiers. Each package features a custom Phillies Nation Phillies hat, a DVD of the 2008 season, a handful of Phanatic figurines, Phillies Nation stickers and a Phillies keychain, courtesy of our friends at WholesaleKeychain.com.

We identified recipients by asking around on our Facebook page and each person who responded was genuinely excited and grateful; so if you haven’t made a donation yet, you still can by clicking here. This really means a lot to these guys and for those of us who normally take their sacrifices for granted, it is an easy way to give some thing back.

This first batch of packages are being delivered to places as far as Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany, Japan, and even the North Pole.  If you know of a Phillies fan serving abroad or are one yourself, and would like us to send a carepackage, please email us through our contact form.

Here are some photos from this weekend’s packing session:

Support Phillies Fans in America’s Armed Services

Posted by Brian Michael, Wed, August 18, 2010 11:05 AM

Phillies Fans in AfghanistanWe all know that there are rabid Phillies fans all around world. Some have moved away from Philly because of business or family, some are born abroad, and some are away protecting our country.

We at Phillies Nation salute those who put their lives on the line every day so that we can enjoy things like the freedom to assemble and watch a Phillies game. We want to give something back. That’s why we’re collecting donations to help put together Phillies care packages for our fellow fans overseas.

We’ve identified some brave men and women through our Facebook fan page to receive packages, but need your help getting them there. Each package will cost $40 including overseas shipping. Please make a donation today and help show the world that Phillies fans are the best fans and people in all of sports.

100% of donations will go towards sending care packages.

Darren Daulton’s Celeb Darts Outing a Success

Posted by Pat Gallen, Mon, February 01, 2010 10:26 AM

It was a great turnout for a great cause.  McFadden’s Ballpark was packed with Phillies fans of all ages to support Darren Daulton’s favorite charity; the Arc of Philadelphia.  Garry Maddox, Larry Christensen, and Larry Anderson all played darts with fans (including myself) and all had a blast.  “Dutch” put together a great night, and was helped by Michael Barkann of CSN, and his wife, Ellen.  Barkann was the emcee of the event.  Here are some pictures:

Jimmy Rollins BASEBowl Tournament

Jimmy Rollins will be hosting his 5th annual celebrity bowling tournament featuring Phillies, sports personalities and entertainers, teamed with bowling foursomes to benefit the Pennsylvania Arthritis Foundation. Last year’s event was a crazy success with our own Pat Gallen providing play-by-play coverage of all the stars. There were over 35 celebrities in attendance including: Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Cole Hamels, Shane Victorino as well as several Eagles and Flyers. Each bowling team is paired with one or two of Jimmy’s celebrity friends while food and an open bar is provide throughout the entire tournament.

The bowling competition, awards ceremony and auction will be held on on June 3, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Lucky Strike Bowling Alley in Center City Philadelphia.  For more information on attending the event through a corporate sponsorship, please see this Sponsorship Sheet, then contact us for more details.

The Jimmy Rollins Family Foundation (501c3) has the mission of bringing funds and awareness to fight against arthritis as well as provide families who are struggling financially with educational and entertainment opportunities to encourage children to stay in school.

The money raised at BASEBowl funds Camp JRA which allows children with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases to have fun, learn about their disease, and form social bonds with others who share their challenges.

Jamie Moyer Answers Contest Winners

Posted by Brian Michael, Mon, September 07, 2009 08:34 AM

Last week we announced the winners of our online raffle held in support of The Moyer Foundation.  As a prize the winners were invited to ask Jamie Moyer interview questions, which he has graciously answered below.

From Mike M.: Jamie, you’ve spent the last 23 years playing major league baseball for 7 different teams in 7 different cities and have spent countless hours traveling all around the country – What is your favorite story or memory from traveling with your team(s)? (i.e. fond memories, humorous teammates/pranks, lost luggage, favorite places, crappy hotels, etc.)

Mike,

The majority of my career has been an incredible journey. I have had the good fortune to play with and against some great players who have impacted my life and the game of baseball in many great ways. Some of my most favorite teammates are Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, and Andre Dawson. The all had a unique way of dealing with their jobs, in a very successful way. Which is something I feel very fortunate that I was able to witness and learn from the three of them. Which I feel has helped me throughout my career.  I’ve certainly stayed in some shady hotels throughout my career, but honestly don’t remember names nor would I want to ever return to them.  Ryan Sanberg was a pretty sneaky prankster. So was Terry Francona!

Christine K.: Would you and your family stay in this area when you retire?  Possibly run a baseball clinic for young players? Your wisdom, knowledge and experience would be invaluable to elementary and high school kids.  You have proven you can endure, and do it successfully.  You are “mentoring” the younger players on the team now, why not share it with others?

Christine,

I’m really not sure what life will bring me in retirement. I am leaving all of my options open at this point. It would be nice to be able to give back to the game that has given me so much! As for now time will tell……!

Thank you both Mike and Christine for your questions. They really allowed me to think of the many great experiences I’ve had in my past!

Best regards,
Jamie Moyer

Moyer Foundation Raffle Winners and DC Group Outing

Posted by Brian Michael, Mon, August 31, 2009 10:38 AM

A big congratulations goes out to Christine, Adam, and Nicola who were selected as winners in our raffle to benefit the Moyer Foundation. They get to ask Jamie Moyer an interview question and Christine and Adam win either a Raul Ibanez autographed baseball or a Jamie Moyer signed ticket stub from his 250th victory. A big thanks goes out to everyone who donated over the past few weeks. We raised over $500 which is enough to send a child to a Camp Erin bereavement camp.  If you haven’t done so yet, please consider making a donation to help support this worth cause.

Also, for any readers in the Washington, DC area, we are considering organizing a group night at Nationals Park for the Phillies game on Thursday, September 10. I figure we can get a bunch of cheap tickets and meet up with the thousands of other Phillies fans in attendance – we may just throw a tailgate party too. If you’re interested in hanging out, please leave a comment or send us an email.

J-Roll’s BaseBowl a Smash Hit

Posted by Pat Gallen, Thu, August 20, 2009 01:30 PM

On Monday night, the Philadelphia Phillies came home and played. It was a different game, however, as they laced up bowling shoes instead of cleats at Lucky Strike Lanes in Center City for a good cause.

Jimmy Rollins held his 4th Annual BaseBowl Charity Event and it was a rousing success as all of the stars came out to raise awareness (and a ton of money) for the Rollins Family Foundation and the Eastern Pennsylvania Arthritis Foundation. Even though the Phillies team plane landed just before 4 a.m. on Monday, J-Roll came with a smile that never left his face for the four-hour shindig.

Just after 3 p.m., Rollins came into the mostly empty third floor and greeted the press, looking as though he missed out on some sleep. Shortly thereafter, the floodgates opened and the guests spilled in to join the party, which cost in the thousands for tickets.

Taking part in the festivities were several local businesses including Citizens Bank, Wyeth, Amgen, and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, who’s team won the charity bowling portion with the highest overall score. For their win, players on the team – which was captained by MLB Network anchor Victor Rojas – each won a signed Jimmy Rollins jersey.

After the guests made their way toward the lanes, causing a sea of humanity as fans tried to get a peak at J-Roll and the awesome collection of auction items, the Phillies players arrived. The list of present and former players took a while to read, with Garry Maddox, Gary Matthews, Milt Thompson, Mitch Williams, and Larry Andersen among the retirees. Newest Phillie Cliff Lee hung out with trade partner Ben Francisco, as well as Cole Hamels and Chase Utley. Ryan Howard was given a rousing ovation, and others like Jayson Werth, J.A. Happ, Scott Eyre, and Shane Victorino also took part.

Some of the amazing auction items up for grabs included jerseys signed by Rollins, Utley, Victorino, and Howard, plus a Derek Jeter signed jersey, signed bases from the World Series, and plenty more. There was even an autographed Ben Roethlisberger uniform, a rather risky item considering the territory. Even so, it did quite well on the auctioning table, garnering a few bids.

It wasn’t all fun and games, even though a hundred-plus took their shots at the red pinstriped pins. Team President David Montgomery, General Manager Ruben Amaro, and assistant GM Benny Looper were seen chatting alone, perhaps talking shop, or scouting the arms of the bowlers. We’ll never know.

After a conversation with Looper, he let me in on just how grueling the process is right before the trade deadline. He said it took “an incredible amount of work and man power” to acquire Cliff Lee on top of scouting the several other players they were considering. With the Roy Halladay scenario, Looper said, “It’s like Christmas. One day its there, the next it’s not.” It certainly has turned out just fine for the Phillies after they “settled” for Lee.

While Looper happened to speak about prospects and the like, everyone else was talking about how much fun they were having. Left and right, people were smiling, seeking autographs, and just enjoying the atmosphere.

Jimmy Rollins may have needed some shut-eye, but the rest of the Phillies fans in attendance were wide-eyed and raring to go. All around, it was a remarkably successful and well-put together affair. J-Roll wouldn’t have it any other way.
