   kieran’s grade, in my opinion, was a bit harsh. Nick, on the other hand, had it right. Schneider is a serviceable, veteran catcher who handles pitchers well and did indeed hit respectably. One KEY POINT about catchers is “How do they handle pitchers?”. And Schneider does a very good job. Some great catchers played excellend defense, handled pitchers well and did not hit well….Johnny Roseboro, Jerry Grote, The Molinas, Steve Yeager and others. Handling pitchers( game calling) is critical when discussing and grading catchers. More important than hitting.

   agree with nick. he was a serviceable backup. it’s hard enough to find a decent starting catcher in the big leagues. he was more than adequate as a backup. kieran needs a bit more perspective!

   His OPS was only 4% below league average. A .345 OBP ain’t bad for a guy that batted .240. For $1 million, I’ll take it. I don’t really know why he got a 2 year deal though.

   What the hell are you smoking? A 4.3?

   It’s not like Schneider came out and gave a Paul Hoover-like performance every day while Chooch was out with that concussion. And it’s not like the Phillies lost every game Schneider had a hand in.

   Sure, he’s not going to get above a seven and no one’s going to handle the pitchers as well as Chooch, but he deserves some credit for coming out the way he did.

   Didn’t he win us one of those crucial games right before the All-Star break? Tell me you weren’t feeling more hopeful after each of those extra-inning wins and I’ll call you a liar.

   Nick’s grade is more like it. Not every catcher can be a Dutch or a Chooch.

   The Phils are a lil short on the MLB ready catcher in minors I think thats its why they gave him a 2yr deal. For the price they can always release him if something better comes up. I think he did an adequate job i would give him a 5.5.

   Kate,

   Once again I find myself in agreement with you. That means you are an incredibly intelligent baseball officianado.

   Schneider did an excellent job as a backup. He had a few huge HR’s that won games for us. He had a few big RBI hits as well.

   A 4.3 is ludicrous. I’d give him a 7. He’s a backup, not a starter. He did his job pretty damn well.

   very harsh grading here. I gotta disagree. I’ve always liked Schneider. Good catcher. great veteran presence to have around the clubhouse. good pop in his bat.

    Once again, a thoughtful review with a thoughtless score. The only issue I have with Schneider is even as a back-up, he can’t stay healthy, so you need a third catcher ready at all times in LV.

    Schneider is a serviceable back-up catcher. Nothing great and nothing horrible. He is good for another year.
    I have written about the “ratings’ before. Just drop it in favor of either a “better or worse than expected”.
