   Growing up in Iowa as a cubs fan in the 80s,Ryne was my all time favorite player. This makes me very happy to have him as a sort of fellow transplant to the Phills. This is great news all around.

   I hope a great all-around player translates into an outstanding manager for the Phils. We traded him for little back in the day. He and Mike Schmidt would have been very dynamic together. He made the HOF as a great second baseman. Wish him the best with the Iron Pigs.

   Ryne Sandberg was the guy that everyone thought would take the reigns from Piniella (in Chicago)… a relatively young HOF inductee that people believe is good enough to be coaching at the ML level… of course this is great! Are you kidding me? I’m not ready to annoint Sandberg as the guy that will replace Charlie but just to have him in your organization is exciting.

    I can’t imagine Sandberg leaving one AAA manager job for another, unless: 1) Chicago has even less young talent than the Phils (who have pitching and ?) 2) He’s so po’d at Chicago, he was willing to take the first job out f town, or 3) He got a pretty decent vibe that he was Charlie’s heir apparent.

    Could not agree more with the previous post. It seems irrational to make a lateral move when I am sure there are lesser managerial positions open that he could have gotten. I think number 3 hits it on the head. While obviously I think Sandberg will be a great manager, this is a subtle move that puts Charlie and the rest of the organization on notice that they have found the heir apparent. If Charlie coaches for another 3-5 years, I would be more than fine with Sandberg taking the reins at that point.

    That’s exactly what I thought when I first found out about it… and it might be sooner than we think. Charlie is pretty old and doesn’t his contract run out by the end of 2011?

    My favorite 2Bman of all-time! Great signing. The heir apparent. Hopefully he will become the bench coach to get ready to take over when Charley goes bye-bye.

    Especially when you look at how the Phils have managed AAA – it is usually a holding spot for veteran back-ups or rehab starts. Most of the near ready younger talent ferments at Reading. He’s not going to generate gaudy numbers or resume fodder at Lehigh Valley.

    While I don’t think Charlie is a great strategist, and thinks he is a little too old school with the pitchers (give them too many chances to work out of problems), I also think he is the right guy for a veteran team – let’s the guys do their thing, doesn’t embarrass anyone in public, doesn’t get into stupid feuds with star talent. It works right now.
