Ryne Sanberg Hired as new Lehigh Valley Manager

Posted by Pat Gallen, Mon, November 15, 2010 10:12 AM

Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg has been hired as manager of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies’ triple-A affiliate in the International League, Chuck LaMar, Assistant General Manager, Player Development & Scouting, announced today.

Sandberg, 51, spent the last four seasons as a manager in the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system with single-A Peoria (2007-08), double-A Tennessee (2009) and triple-A Iowa (2010).  He led his clubs to two first-place finishes and, overall, has a managerial record of 284-277-1 (.505).  This past season, his first as a triple-A manager, Sandberg was named Manager of the Year in the Pacific Coast League after leading the Iowa Cubs to a tie for the best record in the Northern Division (82-62).

A 2005 inductee to Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame, Sandberg was a 10-time National League All-Star and won nine Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger awards during his 16-year career (1981-94, 1996-97).  He was originally drafted by the Phillies in 1978 and made his major league debut with the club in 1981, appearing in 13 games.  Sandberg finished his career with a .285 batting average, 282 home runs, 1,061 RBI and 344 stolen bases in 2,164 games.  At the time of his retirement, his 277 home runs as a second baseman was a major league record.

The remainder of the Phillies’ 2011 player development staff will be announced at a later date.

Our minor league contributor Jay Floyd, wrote about the possibility of the Sandberg hiring last week. Check out what he had to say.

A look back at why the Phillies traded Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs nearly 29 years ago: http://bit.ly/cPtOSH

  4. Wis Says:

Growing up in Iowa as a cubs fan in the 80s,Ryne was my all time favorite player. This makes me very happy to have him as a sort of fellow transplant to the Phills. This is great news all around.

    Jay thanks for the link

  6. Bart Shart Says:

I hope a great all-around player translates into an outstanding manager for the Phils. We traded him for little back in the day. He and Mike Schmidt would have been very dynamic together. He made the HOF as a great second baseman. Wish him the best with the Iron Pigs.

  7. The Original Chuck P Says:

Ryne Sandberg was the guy that everyone thought would take the reigns from Piniella (in Chicago)… a relatively young HOF inductee that people believe is good enough to be coaching at the ML level… of course this is great! Are you kidding me? I’m not ready to annoint Sandberg as the guy that will replace Charlie but just to have him in your organization is exciting.

Hopefully he eventually replaces the dope we have now.

I can’t imagine Sandberg leaving one AAA manager job for another, unless: 1) Chicago has even less young talent than the Phils (who have pitching and ?) 2) He’s so po’d at Chicago, he was willing to take the first job out f town, or 3) He got a pretty decent vibe that he was Charlie’s heir apparent.

  12. Adam Says:

Could not agree more with the previous post. It seems irrational to make a lateral move when I am sure there are lesser managerial positions open that he could have gotten. I think number 3 hits it on the head. While obviously I think Sandberg will be a great manager, this is a subtle move that puts Charlie and the rest of the organization on notice that they have found the heir apparent. If Charlie coaches for another 3-5 years, I would be more than fine with Sandberg taking the reins at that point.

    Look out old man
Better hope your beloved players step up this year
    Especially in the playoffs.

  14. Manny Says:

“3) He got a pretty decent vibe that he was Charlie’s heir apparent.”

That’s exactly what I thought when I first found out about it… and it might be sooner than we think. Charlie is pretty old and doesn’t his contract run out by the end of 2011?

In any case, this is great news!

  15. psujoe Says:

Excellent move. The Cubbies passed him over. Their loss.

  16. Dr. Dave Says:

My favorite 2Bman of all-time! Great signing. The heir apparent. Hopefully he will become the bench coach to get ready to take over when Charley goes bye-bye.

  17. bfo_33 Says:

Especially when you look at how the Phils have managed AAA – it is usually a holding spot for veteran back-ups or rehab starts. Most of the near ready younger talent ferments at Reading. He’s not going to generate gaudy numbers or resume fodder at Lehigh Valley.

While I don’t think Charlie is a great strategist, and thinks he is a little too old school with the pitchers (give them too many chances to work out of problems), I also think he is the right guy for a veteran team – let’s the guys do their thing, doesn’t embarrass anyone in public, doesn’t get into stupid feuds with star talent. It works right now.

New LV Iron Pigs Mgr Ryne Sandberg said “I feel like a kid again…living where it all started for me. This is a perfect fit”!

Good move i think…this way they have another possible candidate when its time for Uncle Cholly to move on…
