Phillippe Aumont Demoted to Clearwater

Phillippe Aumont, best known as the centerpiece of everyone’s favorite Cliff Lee-to-Seattle-trade, has been demoted to Single-A Clearwater.

Aumont was drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 2007 draft by the Mariners, who made him a starter before realizing he was better suited in relief.

The Phillies, upon trading for him, tried to convert him back to a starter to many a scout’s dismay. The results were not pretty at Double-A Reading – in eleven starts, Aumont was 1-6 with a 7.43 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP.

Aumont allowed 55 hits and 38 walks in 49 2/3 innings, while striking out 38. He also threw six wild pitches and hit six batters. Not the best of control…

Now, Aumont will report to Clearwater in hopes of gaining confidence and fine-tuning some “delivery issues,” as stated by Phillies assistant director of minor league operations, Steve Noworyta.

Aumont’s still young – only four months older than me at the ripe age of 21. If he cannot get it together at Clearwater, the Phillies will be the last to realize that the 6′6″ righty is probably more valuable as a late-reliever than anything else.

You can’t use a late inning reliever who walks everybody.

Aumont’s problems so far are likely due to the Phils trying to get him back to what made him such a high draft choice. He was also a starter when drafted. The Mariners not only turned him into a reliever, but had him throw more overhand. It takes some time to re-adjust back to an old motion, and begin again to pace oneself for a longer game situation.

He’s young, and it’s WAY too early to give up on him as a starter or a reliever.

I remember Randy Johnson as a minor leaguer playing for the Indianapolis Indians (then a Montreal minor league affiliate) and him coming out of several games in the first inning because he had no control and was hurting opposing hitters by hitting them. He turned out okay, but he gained some control. Hopefully Aumont is cut from the same cloth. Having a reputation of bad control also did not hurt Mitchie Poo Williams. However, a pitcher really does need more control than what Aumont has shown. Oh well, not much of a silver lining, but it is at least something.
