Top Moment #1: Rollins Wins Game 4 with Improbable Walkoff

JRoll wins it.After eight innings, it appeared to be just out of reach.  The Phillies started strong, putting up two quick runs in the opening inning, then sputtered and received little offense until late – very late.  The Dodgers, on the other hand, made Joe Blanton work through his six frames, and led the game 4-3 going into the ninth inning.

Jonathan Broxton would take the ball with that one run lead, something he had done countless times in 2009. His fastball was as potent as ever, hitting at least 98 with every push of his right arm.  The Phils, however, seemed to realize the urgency at exactly the right moment.  For the past few seasons, this core group of guys have given us plenty of pulse-pumping moments late in games.  NLCS Game 4 would be no different.

As I sat in Section 330, fortunate enough to score a ticket just prior to game time, the faithful became increasingly ornery as the game passed and the Phillies looked as chilly as the October air. We witnessed countless at-bats go by with nary an opportunity, which added insult to injury as our section became a wind tunnel, sending us into a bone-chilled coma for the middle innings.  But that’s how legends – and legendary games – work.  A savior comes out of nowhere to lift up the followers who are seemingly down and out, puts them on his back and magically transforms “what could have been” into “what was.”

This happened to be Jimmy Rollins’ night. His trials and tribulations at the dish have been well documented during the last two seasons.  He just hasn’t been the same guy who took home the 2007 MVP Award.  Didn’t matter, because during Game 4, he had one more improbable, heart-stopping moment left in him.

http://www.pe.com/imagesdaily/2009/10-20/blog_nlcsdodgers20tlpr.jpgWith runners on first and second (Eric Bruntlett running for Matt Stairs, who walked, and Carlos Ruiz who was hit by a pitch), J-Roll stepped into the box as confident as ever, even if his batting average read .212 before the first pitch of the contest was thrown. During this at-bat against Broxton, as he attempted to save the Phillies from a tied series, he fouled off the first offering, then took the second pitch, a 99 m.p.h fastball, for a ball. The fans were starting to get amped, but with cautious optimism. “This would be too outrageous,” many of us asked each other.  With a 1-1 count, Jimmy Rollins would send the 46,000-plus into a frenzy.

Rollins nailed a fastball right down the heart of the plate into the right-center field gap, plating both Bruntlett and Ruiz, and in the process nearly causing a structure failure as CBP exploded from every angle.  Fans embraced, people screamed and cheered, and Jimmy Rollins, who’d been long-forgotten as a clutch hitter, saved the Phillies. After his rocket shot allowed both men to touch home plate, he became responsible for one of the greatest games in Philadelphia Phillies history.

Phillies 5, Dodgers 4

-That concludes our Top 25 Moments of the 2009 season.  Although it didn’t end quite the way Phillies fans had hoped, it still goes down as one of the best in franchise history. Ninety-three wins, another World Series appearance, and some great games along the way all made for a spectacular 2009.

That call by Scott Franske….it STILL gives me chills!!

    WOW!!

Thanks for including that. You made my rainy Monday, Pat.

  2. Nick Says:

I was also at this game and it was just electric. When Jimmy came up u just had a feeling something would happen with the success we’ve had off broxton!!

  3. BS Says:

I remember watching this and celebrating with joy, while my Mets-fan roommate cumpled in despair. Still brings a smile to my face. =D

  4. The Second John Says:

Wow, this just got me pumped for pitchers and catchers.

Also, here is the video of the post game crew reacting to the Phillies win

  5. bfo_33 Says:

Leading up to it, the Stairs walk was also incredible. I have never seen a pitcher so obviously itimidated. I guess that’s what happens when you give up a 500′ homer the previous year.

  6. Chuck Says:

The moment Broxton saw Matt Stairs….he started to sh!t his pants..

Stairs didn’t do jack for the whole postseason….but that walk was worth having him on the roster..

That’s why I can’t understand why people bitch so much about the bench guys…they’re there for a reason…and they contribute in such small ways…that can lead to big outcomes..

  7. Manny Says:

This was so awesome!!! It gives me the chills everytime I watch it… even with the TBS announcers making the call!

Broxton firing 99mphs baseballs… and there were TWO outs already…

This really was the top moment of 2009!

  8. Manny Says:

By the way, anyone remembers this?

    EPIC FAIL!!!!

  9. Chuck Says:

    That’s EPIC for sure…

    1948…Dewey Defeats Truman…all over again..

  10. Jeff Dowder Says:

This was without question the greatest moment of any game that I attended last season. CBP just exploded after that hit. Amazingly, a lot of fans were heading for the exits after the Phillies batted in the bottom of the eighth. I guess they heard the call while they were on I95 or the Schuylkill…

  11. Scott Says:

My favorite part about Scott Franske’s call, Larry laughing hysterically in the background.

  12. Johnny Says:

    That was a shocking moment.

  13. joe Says:

I remember jumping off my couch and waving my arm around like a 3rd base coach screaming “SCORE CHOOCH! SCORE CHOOCH! RUN! RUN! RUN!”

…and then running around my house for about 10 minutes

  14. Phiajen Says:

I will never ever forget that moment. It will go down in my memory books as the day the ballpark moved. The stadium actually felt like it moved from the noise explosion.

  15. Phiajen Says:

When you watch the video of Franske Call you can see the camera shake with the noise.

  16. PhillyMurph Says:

Gives me goose bumps just seeing the video and remembering that night…is it baseball season yet?

  17. Nick Says:

Man I still tear up when I see this play. Only 2 plays that I tear up in happiness for are this one and the Eric Hinske strikeout

What a beautiful moment. What a great team.

TBS actually did a solid job with this call unlike the “Go Rockies” Howard call.

  18. Nick Says:

If you look at the crowd in the background its great, everyone is collectively jumping up and down.

  19. Ed R. Says:

    Off topic…anyone see this?

also, stairs signed a minor league deal with the padres. i hope he makes the club and gets to play at cbp, so that he can get one last ovation.

  21. Manny Says:

They also show thebullpen guys jumping up and down as Chooch goes past 3rd! haha

  22. Keith E Says:

Chooch flew the final 15 feet! That was insane.
    GO PHILS!!!

  23. shag beta sigma delta Says:

I grew up watching the Phils at the Vet wearing the powder blue, still my favorite uniforms. Also was at this game knew it would be #1 as soon as the list started to come out. Remember sitting in the same aisle as two dodger fans, I remember them just putting their heads down and walking away as soon as the runs scored. It was by far the most memorable, and exciting game I have attended in my life. Which spans the opening year of Vet stadium till now. I would say it was the most electrifying live event I have ever attended. The instantaneous explosion of emotion was unmatched. My wife was a casual fan of the Phillies because of me, after that game, she totally understands the why there can be so much passion for a game. Thank you Phillies

  24. ALPHONSE DATTOLO Says:

THE PHILLIES HAVE PUT MANY SMILES ON MY FACE IN THE PAST 50 YEARS BUT THIS ONE IS IN MY TOP TEN. THE PHILLIES WILL BE THE 2010 WORLD CHAMPIONS.

  25. Chris.I Says:

They say that 6 teams are pushing for Wang…Does anyone here think that the Phils might be one of them teams? I like Wang because he’s sort of like Martinez was last season, a low risk/high reward pick up. How much could this guy possibly get in the free agent market due to the horrible numbers he put up last season? I hope Martinez is still on Amaros radar. I remember Amaro mentioning he was a possibility a few weeks ago.

  26. James Kay Says:

    BEAT LA! BEAT LA!

  27. Mr. Phil Says:

Being at that game and witnessing the moment firsthand was the greatest sports moment I have been a part of. The moment was surreal. Unbelievable feeling.

  28. Michael Baumann Says:

I went to bed after the 8th inning of that game. I’ve stayed up for every playoff game since Game 4 of the 1993 World Series, and I had work and class the next day and I was soooo tired……
    I’ve hated myself ever since.

  29. John C. Says:

I was able to purchase standing room only tickets the day of the game from a family friend. When Stairs walked and Ruiz everyone rose from their seats, so myself, and a Chicago transplant (The Phillies are is second favorite team…Go figure) went over to the stairs leading down to the main concourse on the first-base side. I got a perfect view of the ball and Ethier running towards the gap. It was truely epic, and worth every “Deluxe” beverage I drank that night.

On another note…CHIP CAREY WONT DO TBS BASEBALL ANYMORE! REJOICE “The throw to the plate, NOT IN TIME!” What throw would that be Chip?

  30. matt p Says:

i was one of those idiots that left early.

  31. Brian Sr. of CO Says:

I will NEVER forget that day. Oct 19th 2009. I was sitting in the hospital trying not to scream and wake up my new born son, and amy wife who was finally trying to sleep. I lost the fight of not trying to wake up my wafe, but thankfully she was also excited. What a day. One of the most clutch hits I have seen, one of the best games I have seen, and all on the same day my son was born! Simply awesome. Than I got the celebrate the back to back NL Champs on my birthday! What a month!

  32. Kate Says:

And this is why I say anyone who wants to forget the 2009 season is either insane or no real fan.

My mother headed up to bed a little while before this, saying I was an idiot to stay up to watch them lose. I wanted to see the end of the game. I knew anything was possible. I kept saying before this, “Our guys can pull two in a row in Hollywood.” The when she went to bed, I said, “You will hate yourself forever. This squad is KNOWN for pulling it out of the crapper at the end of the game.”

Fittingly, I woke her up with my screaming as Bruntlett, then Ruiz, crossed the plate.

What a wonderful memory and a good reason why Rollins is one of the greatest Phillies of all time.

  33. T-Johns Says:

This was the best game ever. GO ROLLINS. He didn’t come through last year, but he came through in that game.
