Year In Review: Chad Durbin

Posted by Amanda Orr, Thu, November 19, 2009 09:19 AM

Over the next few weeks, Phillies Nation will break down each player on the Phillies roster and grade their 2009 season on a very unofficial 1-10 scale. The players will be chosen in no particular order.

Coming off a year in which he posted a 2.87 earned run average, Chad Durbin’s expectations were high coming into 2009.  During arbitration, Durbin was given a well deserved $735,000 raise.  Durbin wasn’t expected to duplicate his 2008 season, however he would serve as a reliable long man or right handed specialist.

Unfortunately, injuries played a part in Durbin’s season.  In July, Durbin was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right latissimus strain.

Overall, Durbin had a solid season.  He went 2-2 with a 4.39 ERA.  He saved 2 games in 3 opportunities, and had 8 holds.  He held opponents to a .234 batting average with runners on base.  He had a decent strikeout ratio: 8.01 per nine innings.  When he started to walk batters, he got into trouble.  Durbin did not allow many hits; his WHIP was high because he walked 6.07 batters per nine.

The bullpen was such an important factor, especially Durbin.  When Durbin did well, the team usually did well.  In both the division and championship series, Durbin did not allow a base runner.  However, when Durbin struggled, so did the Phillies, as shown in the World Series.  During the regular season, Durbin gave up at least one earned run in 20 games.  The Phillies lost 14 of those games.

2009 numbers: 59 games, 2-2, 69.2 IP, 4.39 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 62 K/47 BB, .220 BAA

GRADE: 5 — Durbin was pretty average.  There were times he came up big.  But there were also times where he was unable to.

in 2008, Durbin’s arm was shot by the 2nd half of the season… this year, he really helped us down the stretch

I would like to see him stay with the phillies for a few more years

  2. bfo_33 Says:

Agreed, a big part of the bullpen. A full season of Lee should reduce the bullpen load, hopefully the Chad can stay healthy. Still need a righty starter that can go 7. I’d like to think that Piniero could fit the bill at a reasonable $ amount, but am concerned that Duncan is a big part of their success, never seem to repeat it elsewhere (most recently Jeff Weaver).

  3. Griffin Says:

I believe Durbin is arbitration eligible this off-season which means he’s a possible non-tender candidate. He’s not a bad 11th man on the pitching staff while he’s relatively cheap, but less expensive alternatives can be found.

  4. Dudley Monk Says:

I see Durbin bouncing back in 2010. He is an integral part of the back end of our bullpen and we know what we have in him. Overall, a decent pitcher.

  5. Manny Says:

He looked nasty at times… but he’d also give up key hits… I still want him on the team next year for sure.

  6. LukesInSir Says:

Chad Durbin’s biggest attribute was his ability to pitch to contact, strong contact, masculine contact, the kind of contact that makes you question why your pants are getting so tight. His form, his style and most of all his chin pubes added an element of excitement to an already ‘rousing situation. I also loved when his fastball got in on you, because it got in, really, really hard.

  7. beta sigma shag Says:

Except for he bouts with wildness, Chad was a good guy to have in the pen. A guy who can go two maybe 3 innings, but can also come in and shut teams down with men on base. I doubt he is going anywhere, especially if Chopper wants to start somewhere else. Personally I would like to see some of the young guys get some time in the pen. Bastardo, Escolona(spelled wrong) I think both of these guys and some of the guys in the minors would be a huge help if they can carry some of the load for the pen.

  8. George Says:

For once I totally agree with the assessment. Durbin was average.

Right now, he and Condrey are arbitration eligible. Replacing either probably hinges on what else is available. Durbin may be too costly, but Condrey could be an injury risk given his age and his ills in 2009. There isn’t much else out there that’s affordable, though, and both may be back.

LukeInSir sounds like a pervert, but probably only thinks he’s funny, which he isn’t. I don’t usually berate other’s posts, but I’ll make an exception for this kind of drivel.

  9. psujoe Says:

ANyone know what eyre asked for? Ruben said he “may have priced himself out of a job”.

  10. Manny Says:

psujoe: Did Amaro really say that? Link?

I really think Eyre is KEY for our pen. Doens’t he have like a 1.50 ERA with the Phillies in the past two seasons? Am I missing something here? Eyre is the man! Pay him his money and get him back on board.

  11. Scott Says:

LukesInSir I think you and Chad need to get a room!

  12. Don M Says:

Amaro said that a few days ago .. .

Eyre is either going to play for the Phillies, or retire.. he said he wouldn’t play for another team

Its a tough spot, because im sure the Phillies want him back.. but they would have to make it worth his while.. so we’ll see

  13. 2010 WF Champs Says:

I got a fetish for sniffing the “hot flash” area on Hillary Clinton’s Pant Suits ….. “You’re gonna like the way it smells. I guar-an-tee it….

  14. George Says:

More unfunny drivel from yet another cretin, 2010 WF Champs.

Please, if all you think about is adolescent stupidity, find a porn site to post on.

  15. 2010 WF Champs Says:

George..Lighten up your Majesty.. Look I agree that Luke’s comment was way out there in f*cking Outer Space. I’ll stop right there for that one. My last post???? It was a little distasteful, but come on it wasn’t that bad. And I meet here 2-3 times during the 2008 Campaign. She’d continue answering before and after rally.Too If she would’ve divorced her Husband, she’d be President righth now.

  16. 2010 WF Champs Says:

and one more thing…. you’re a complete jacka$$. You brought up the magic P word. A bad job on your part in trying cover up your number #1 vice P spots…drip, drip b*tch!

  17. Sheri Says:

Durbin sucks. When he blows it, he blows it big. He’s not consistent and chokes in clutch situations.

  18. jman Says:

“Eyre is either going to play for the Phillies, or retire.. he said he wouldn’t play for another team

Its a tough spot, because im sure the Phillies want him back.. but they would have to make it worth his while.. ”

Since Eyre has already said he won’t pitch for another team, his free agent status is really moot. Amaro can take the stance that “either Eyre wants to pitch or he doesn’t”, and doesn’t have to make it worth his while.
