Pedro Pitches in AAA

Posted by Amanda Orr, Sat, August 01, 2009 12:27 PM

Pedro Martinez made his second rehab appearance; only this time with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.  Martinez struggled in the IronPigs 9-6 loss to the Columbus Clippers.

“I got better, and it showed that I got better as it got going,” said Martinez. “Without a doubt, I’m going to have to pitch a little more to get to the consistent level I’m used to being.”

In five innings, Martinez allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits and three walks.  He struck out four and allowed a home run to Michael Brantley.

Former Phillies farmhand, Carlos Carrasco earned the victory against his former club.  He allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.  He walked one and struck out six.  Michael Taylor homered off him.

Not ready for the big league but not ready to call the clippers his daddy. Hope he gets better if he’s going to eventually come up and pitch for us.

  2. Phan in TN Says:

i have no faith in him. I never have liked him and i think he’s a big waste of money.

even if his fastball magically gets all the way up to 90 MPH he will do little more than lose a game or two for us.

we need to trade him for some bats or bleachers.

  3. Mazinman Says:

I think there was promise in his start. He looked good, with the exception of the home run he gave up, until the 5th inning. Even if he can’t get up to being able to start a game he might be able to give us some good innings in the bullpen.

  4. beta sigma shag Says:

I agree, I do not see him ready to help this team now, or in the near future, a few more “rehab” starts then hand him his million dollars and tell him to have fun in the winter leagues.

  5. NJ Says:

Pedro can’t help this team like Happ could in the rotation but if he goes to the pen with the right attitude I think he could be really productive.

other than a right handed moyer efffect (Veteran pitcher feasting on young teams) match-up I’m not certain how he fits in other than as a right handed option we keep around in case the triple lefty rotation becomes an issue. Conventional baseball wisdom always says its good to have an excess of pitchers but what a headache it becomes for the coaches to balance the normal merit based pecking order against possible affects of bruised egos, and unmet expectations on clubhouse dynamics. One reason why I am glad Brad “Bad” Penny is not here.
Speaking of the the Red Sox, what do you with Tim Wakefield…other than the unpredictiblity of the knuckle ball’s effectiveness as a concern for Francona, you also lose a roster spot for his catcher . After his excellent season, if he’s healthy, does he have a spot on the post season roster? Not that I think this is a clubhouse wrecker if he wasn’t included. Maybe they are preening V-Mart to catch him esp. since other than catching and gunning down base stealers, a catcher doesn’t have to really call a game for a knuckleballer.
I never worry about our clubhouse dynamic too much, but I’ve heard Pedro can be quite a reality tv type personality. Whatever the case may be, what a pain in the ass for the catchers to deal with all these changes. I wonder if catchers in general hate this time of year other than the obvious drudgery of summer time heat and dressing up like an armadillo everyday.

  7. TBT Says:

Other than his second pitch of the night, Pedro looked good through the first four inning. The fifth got alittle dicey and I wondered if fatigue or the COlumbus hitters seeing him for a second time played a greater role in hispoor fifth inning.

  8. baseballfan Says:

Well TBT, if they got use to seeing him, then the major league hitters will not even give him one way through the order.

He needs to be getting to the consistancy where he is used to performing? yea, he has not done that in 4 years.
