Minor Leagues: Savery Improves To 8-1
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, June 16, 2009 10:00 AM
A quick recap of the minors from Monday:
- The Reading Phillies defeated Harrisburg, lifting Joe Savery to an 8-1 record. The former first-round pick walked three and struck out four in six innings of one-hit ball, lowering his ERA to 3.47. Michael Taylor is hitting .332 after a 1-for-3 game.
- The IronPigs won, 8-5. Carlos Carrasco got a rare win (2-7), pitching his usual game this season: 6.1 innings, four runs, five strikeouts. Former big-league Phillie Miguel Cairo went 2-for-4, raising his average to .344.
- Clearwater lost, 7-5, to Saraosta, as Julian Sampson continued his 2009 struggles. He allowed six runs in five innings, taking his ERA above 8.00. The Threshers are currently without their best player, top prospect Dominic Brown, who’s out for three-to-four weeks with a broken finger.
- Lakewood lost, 5-1, to Delmarva. Jason Knapp fell to 2-5, giving up four runs (none earned) in 5.1 innings. He struck out seven but walked five. Justin De Fratus lowered his ERA to 1.65 after 1.2 scoreless. Travis d’Arnaud, trying to jump over .200 in a bad offensive season, went 2-for-4 with a double. The game was stopped after seven.

The Phillies better sign that catcher they drafted over slot. It looks like the catching situation behind Ruiz & Coste isnt so great after all.
Joe Savery could be a great trade chip.

Has savery been decent all season with a 3.47 era, or was he struggling and now resurging?

From what I understand, he has been decent all season. I was a little surprised to hear that he is not thought of as a top prospect. Reading has a pretty stacked rotation

FYI – The Lakewood game with Delmarva was a double-header, which is why the first game was finished in 7. Lakewood won Game 2, 6-4. Trevor May, the Phillies 4th round draft pick from 2008, made his first start of the season and actually struck out the first five batters he faced. His final line of 3.2 2 3 3 5 8 was a bit of a mixed bag though. He also hit a batter in the 2nd.

Hydrant-
There may have been a rain delay in that Lakewood game? Might explain his 3.2 innings.
Geoff-
I think Susac rejected the Phills offer.

Is it a lock that the majority of people think Drabek is considered more “untouchable” than Knapp. Frankly, I wouldn’t trade either. The potential of a 2011 rotaion of Hamels, Drabek, Knapp, Carrasco, Savery could be special.

Geoff they have Valle, D.naud, marson. Naughton. they have catching. and just sign a high school kid out of florida Mitchell. The player you want them to sign is colvin he is a high school kid in the low 90’s already, but a lot of upside.

If the Phillies had ponied up the cash, they could have had Rick Porcello pitching for them in the majors instead of Joe Savery who might become a back end of the rotation-type starter.
On Baseball America, they posted a list of the 2008 draftees who have performed the best and #13 on that list is Jason Knapp. Unfortunately, #12 on that list is Christian Friedrich, the LHP the Phillies passed up in order to draft Anthony Hewitt.

Yeah, the catcher is Andrew Susac and he’s demanding a LOT of money.
