   what are the chances of drabek being promoted to AAA? Do the Phillies think he is ready? or do they want him to get more time in AA?

   I’m interested to see what Flande can do at Reading. I don’t think the Phils will promote Drabek yet, but stranger things have happened.

   I think Drabek will be promoted to AAA and finish the season in AAA. He is that good. Hell have a chance to make the starting rotation in ST.

   Flande has become a legitimate prospect. He will solidify that status if he does well in AA.

   The obvious answer here is Carassco to the majors, and Drabek to AAA, but I think Savery could be a dark horse candidate to be promoted to AAA. He just pitched last night for Reading and threw 6 innings of 2 hit, 0ER ball, lowering his ERA to 3.08. He isn’t as good as Drabek, but I wonder if the Phils would be hesitant to promote Drabek again so soon as moving him from A to AA.

   Regardless, I’m excited for the farm right now. Phillies prospects, most notably Pitching prospects, are really improving.

   It looks like Carrasco will be promoted to the majors (not official, but that is what everyone is saying).

   If I had to guess, either Drabek or Savery would be called up to AAA. I might lean toward Savery. Yes, Drabek is having a good year (and the better prospect of the two), but he might need more seasoning in AA. Savery is 3 years older and spent all season at AA so far and is 10-1 with an ERA just over 3.

   I think Drabek will be in AAA by the end of the season, but I’m not sure it would be now. Again, this is only my prediction.

   No need to jump Drabek, Savery, etc.. before the trade deadline ..

   If they are tearing it up, let them keep looking great against that AA competition.. keep their trade values as high as possible..

   (Not that I want to see Drabek traded of course…) but I think Savery could have value.. maybe a team like the REDS looking to move a verteran pitcher would ask for a throw-in like Savery ?? …

   just no need to call them up now.. if they aren’t going to make the big league roster now.. wait until after the deadline.. let them go to AAA to end the season

   Wow, if they called up Kendrick now that would make no sense. That shouldnt even be a thought in your mind. He hasnt improved enough to warrant consideration.

    …or Haren from Arizona… How about Grienke from Kansas City, Felix Hernandez from Seattle or how about Strasburg (Yes I know he can’t be traded which is my point)

    The Phils have a handful of expendable pieces and rumors suggest Donald, Marson and Taylor as well as Carrasco and Bastardo will probably be the most talk about centrepieces of a trade but it looks increasingly unlikely the Phils will be able to land the kind of names thrown about here as if they were realistic possibilities and not trading for them right now would be a massive failure by the front office.

    There’s some realistic names out there that could really help this team in the immediate future and allow the Phils time to position themselves in the off-season. The goal right now has to be to replace Myers and have a play-off rotation of Hamels, Blanton, player X and either Happ or Moyer depending on the situation. If the Phils are performing as a team that’s a good enough foursome to go into October with.

    As for Savery he’s a former first round pick the Phils gave a decent signing bonus to who’s showing promising improvement, he’s far from a failure to sweeten a deal like CJ Henry in the Abreu deal. Sure he’s not got Carrasco’s value (which is probably higher than we’d think considering the number of top prospect lists he’s on) but he’s got decent value.

    As for Flande, this guy could have some kind of a future with the big team.

    I like the statement you made Don about not promoting anyone right now because if they are performing at the level they are at now, why risk moving them up and having them struggle to adjust. It can only hurt their trade value. I really hope we finally get to see Carrasco pitch Thursday. I really think he is going to shine up here and quiet all of the trade talks. If he can be that 2-3 guy, we can trade some minor pieces for a bullpen arm. Leave Mayberry up here to be the RH bat, and keep grooming Taylor and Brown. Carrasco’s K/BB ratio has always been good and that usually means great things in the Majors.

    By the way, C.J. Henry is going to play basketball at Kansas this year. So maybe one day he’ll have a chance to disappoint the Sixers as much as he did the Phillies.

    NJ – What’s the story with Flande? I was looking at Taylor’s stats last night and that guy is a monster. Why would we trade him? I mean, aren’t Drabek and he #s 1 and 2 in the system. Personally, I think we have excess that also has value ( a good thing to have) i.e. Marson, Donald (do you ever see one name without the other?) and Savery, just to name a few.

    Flande’s a 23 year old Dominican in his second year of minor league ball, looks as if he dominated rookie ball last year and has been better in single. Sounds like he’s cut from the same cloth as Bastardo with a low nineties fastball with movment and a good change for his level of experience. Looks as if due to his age it’ll be hard to gauge him until he faces batters at the same talent level.

    It’s a bit early to call Taylor a monster but he looks capable of being a top class major leaguer and as a 5th round draft pick and so much buzz his value is probably inflated past what it should be, considering it took LaPorta to land Sabathia last year making him available MIGHT increase the chances of landing a frontline pitcher. Donald and Marson have value because of having what looks like major league capable bats. I really doubt more than 1 if any of our prominent prospects will be moved since the available veteran talent pool looks to be thin. I think Meche and Harang who are our best hopes are going to be hard arms to land and their contract is a little prohibitive if the Amaro does want to go shopping in the off-season.

    I think it’s going to be a reach to expect the Phils to do more than just reinforce what’s already in place. Almost all of the roster is scheduled to return next year and in theory Hamels, Utley, Howard, Werth, Victorino, Madson should be that bit better so considering the prospects that’ll be on the brink this time next year. It’s not a stretch to think the Phils will be guarded about being too active on the market knowing what’s to come that should lengthen the window of opportunity and justify looking at giving Howard a new deal with the money saved by having more cheap young talent with the big club which is something we don’t have much of now. To be honest if I was in Amaro’s chair that would be my thought pattern.

    Also have just read what could be very important news about Scott Mathieson. He and Escolona could be very important to the Phils pen which is in dire need of young controllable talent to give payroll flexibility.

    Damn, you’re better than Ken Rosenthal. But then again, who isn’t? Is Meche available? Now thats a guy I’d like to have. Taylor is hitting .350. My god. I would stretch and take the shot at Halladay (on the off chance he becomes available). Otherwise, eh.

    I was never nuts about Mathieson. As I recall, he does not have much of a breaking ball and while he had a lot of velocity, he didn’t have much movement on the fastball.. From what I remember.

    I love when people say it too early to call Taylor a stud or monster. But gio gonzalez is ?who has been traded four times, la porta was at double a and consider a stud. check his numbers and check taylors, and la porta failed and was sent down, and he played in a hitter league, in double a, Taylor is just someone who fell under the radar and a lot of so called expert{law] and others made a mistake, remember he is from stanford who hitting coach and manager teaches a swing,that isn’t good for major league hitters, mayberry is another stanford swing. Taylor has a cannon for a arm. plus speed, hits for average, power, has done it at four levels, but he isn’ a monster? only because scouts hate to say they are wrong.

    Oh god no, I’ve only got a fan with the internets knowledge. Rosenthal’s got the journalistic integrity of Rupert Murdoch bred with a snake but he’s young and looks for real.

    The Phils have been rumored to be looking at Meche and KC. Who knows how available he is though as he’s only signed up until the end of next year and is on a loosing team sense says he could be had. KC has been also rumoured to be scouting the the Iron Pigs (though considering the Phils are known buyers that seems little more than coincidence).

    Problem with Halladay more so than Cliff Lee is the Jays have little incentive to deal him now, they’ve made it clear want to re-sign him and know if they can’t get a extension done they’ll still get premium value this time next year, if anything right now their probably looking to add on a couple of smaller pieces to reinforce their playoff hopes.

    Sorry NJ to answer your other question Why not Grienke I don’t like pitchers who play in big parks and give up more hits than innings pitch, he scares me and most will say its because he plays for a bad team , carlton played for a bad team and still had great numbers. 27 game winner when the team won I believe less than sixty games that year. felix is a stud pitcher who as you say won’t be traded either would Grienke but that just my opinion on both of them

    Well, Meche is a guy I’d like. A real upgrade. The problem with the Jays is that they know they’re not making the playoffs, but they’re so in it that they have to make a good faith effort and not look like they’re tanking. Ken Harrelson did that a few years back by selling when he was like 5 games out or something and took a lotta shit. But he didn’t care and it was the right move. He knew the Sox weren’t making it. It would look bad for the Jays to deal Halladay when they’re say 5 games out of the wildcard on July 30. I pray they go on a 2-15 run so they can dispense with all this playoff hope baloney and start listening to offers.

    mikemike I don’t mean to demean Taylor at all, I think buzz words get thrown around too easily for prospects (especially those who haven’t played above AA) and even at the major league level where guys like Markakis and Rios were labelled ‘monsters’ without having elite power.

    I believe expectations should be grounded, the same people were throwing buzz words at Marson last year have all but discarded him as a future top flight catcher because the expectations were so high for a guy who hadn’t played a single game above AA and I think he’s as good right now as he was last year. Personally I only really see the term ‘monster’ applying to power hitters/pitchers, I think Taylor more deserving of a title like future top class all-around player than ‘monster’.

    Anyway on LaPorta, he’s hardly failed, 13 major league games in his third year is far from failure. Going into the year he hadn’t played a single game above AA, he’s ticking off all the boxes in AAA and wouldn’t have seen time with the big club if the Indians weren’t playing so poorly this year.

    Even with a 2-15 run the Jays are incredibly unlikely to trade Halladay until they’ve exhausted all opportunities to re-sign. It’s going to take a massive breakdown in communication between their front office and Halladay’s camp for them to seriously entertain offers and there’s a years window for that to happen.

    I’m going to put my neck of the line and say neither Halladay or Lee gets dealt before the deadline and it’s not even worth breathing Haren’s name as a long-shot target until mid way through 2011, 18 months before he’s due to be a free agent.

    Does anyone here actually EXPECT the Phils to be able to trade for Lee or Halladay or any other name of that calibre with free agency nearing?

    My point about la porta is he was at double a like taylor, and didn’t have taylors success yet he was consider a stud, and la porta can’t field where if you read the nighly reports on taylor he has a rocket arm. The other night the yankee minor league announcer where in awe of his play in the outfield, and saying why isn’t this kid in the majors.

    I said this yesterday… Carrasco’s promotion is as much about moving the farm along as it is about believing that it’s Carlos’ time to shine. I don’t know what to expect out of him but it’s time for him to get his shot… it’s time to reward and challenge the other young arms that are throwing filth in our system. Flande, Drabek, Savery… gotta see what they’ve got.

    Taylor/Brown/Drabek/Knapp = off limits

    Marson/Donald/Savery… go get Duke

    NJ was being sarcastic about Greinke… quite possibly, the best young pitcher in the baseball… you don’t trade those guys and anyone who mentions Greinke, Haren, Halladay, Felix is dumb.

    Think you are selling LaPorta short, he did earn his reputation with a heavy bat which is expected to yield consistent power. In AA he did what his reputation suggested. I do appreciate your viewpoint on Taylor, I just hate these terms being thrown around like every prospect has to come up and emulate Longoria/Lincecum otherwise new derogatory tags are applied.

    I’ve heard rumblings the Phils will probably look to move Taylor to first at some point rather than have to drag around that massive body in the outfield.

    Anyone got any more info on Flande? Write-ups on him seem to be very scarce.

    Three years from now, I see the lineup looking something like this:

    Dominic Brown (RF)… upside: Carl Crawford
    Victorino (CF)
    Utley
    Howard
    Taylor… upside: Dave Winfield
    FA shortstop
    FA 3rd Baseman
    Carlos Ruiz
    Hamels, Carrasco, Happ, Drabek, FA

    Flande is right now a two pitch, pitcher fastball which is about 90 and changeup, is trying to get his breaking ball together, this is the same problem that bastardo had and why I didn’t want him called up yet. You can’t be a starter and only throw two pitches especially if one is a 89-90 fastball, you need some kind of breaking pitch to keep hitters off balance,

    hear he’s pretty consistent around 91-92 with more movement than Bastardo, there really is barely anything written about the guy… Guess we’ll start to hear more if he keeps putting up those stellar numbers.

    Don’t think we’re done hearing about Bastardo by any means, really do think he’ll put it together if he’s put back in the minors to work on his game as a starter especially if he can get that slider going.

    I think Bastardo’s best pitch is his change up which he’s been afraid to throw. I would love, love, love to see him go to the pen this year. Taylor is 6-5. Thats pretty freakin big for anyone who’s not a first baseman or pitcher. If he’s got wheels maybe he can play right. NJ – while economics and “controlability” are surely important, I think there comes a time when you just have to “throw down” and make the big one. If Halladay or Lee were to become available, and you’re in a big playoff push, maybe you have to part with that Taylor or even Drabek (for Halladay). Halladay is that good. He’s great, he doesn’t have arm problems, and he’s consistent. In short, he might be the best pitcher in baseball. Of course, signing an extension would have to be part of that. But if I’m the Blue Jays, I’m not letting the best pitcher in baseball go. But hey, Wilt got traded. Babe Ruth got traded. Who knows.

    I have been looking around http://www.philliesnation.com and really am impressed by the amazing content material here. I work the nightshift at my job and it is so boring. I have been coming right here for the previous couple nights and reading. I simply wanted to let you know that I’ve been enjoying what I have seen and I look forward to reading more.
