Drabek Solid In Reading Spotlight

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, June 04, 2009 10:52 AM

Milwaukee BrewersKyle Drabek didn’t disappoint in his debut with the double-A Reading Phillies, allowing just three hits and three walks in seven scoreless frames. He struck out four. The Phillies won, 6-1, thanks to a couple RBI from Quintin Berry.

Mike Drago of the Reading Eagle reports Drabek’s head spun after the game, as reporters swarmed his locker with questions about his debut. Drago added the debut brought the most attention to a prospect in Reading since Cole Hamels’ debut there; moreover, it was even better than Hamels’ debut there. Catcher Paul Bako liked what he saw:

“His stuff was great. He was a little frustrated with his command at times; I think it could be better. He’s got three quality pitches, and I think he’s gonna be fine for quite awhile.”

I guess this makes him untouchable now!

  2. Don M Says:

He’s about the only untouchable on the farm..

And they’ll definitely be keeping ONE of Michael Taylor and Dominic Brown (if not both)

  3. Greg B Says:

    Any word on Vic’s hip?

  4. Tim Malcolm Says:

He’s getting it looked at today. It’s 8:45 a.m. out there right now.

  5. Geoff Says:

Like I said last night, hell be in teh rotation when Blanton leaves if not sooner, and probably will be a Super Two Arb player. Definitely Ace or Number 2 caliber pitcher. Hes not going to be traded. I actually dont think Taylor or Brown will be traded unless the Phillies reach for a really big name pitcher. I really just see them getting a solid right-handed sinkerball pitcher to be that 4th man in the playoff rotation, theyll keep Moyer around and maybe even Bastardo to come out of the pen in teh playoffs. Apparently EVERY team theyve called about a starter wants JA Happ or else theyre hanging up. So, taht means it wont be easy to land a starter. because JA Happ isnt going to be traded.

  6. Griffin Says:

In an unrelated story, from Buster Olney’s blog:

“The Phillies have called the Red Sox to ask about Brad Penny, and were told that the asking price would be infielder Jason Donald.”

  7. Geoff Says:

I would NOT trade Jason Donald for Brad Penny….ever. NO NO NO.

  8. Jack Says:

I am so tired of hearing people consistently say “we need a sinker ball pitcher”. If a pitcher is a quality pitcher, then he will more than likely be a quality pitcher anywhere he lands. Sinker ball pitchers do not only pitch in one ball park, they pitch in “hitters: parks as well. I know the organization isnt looking for a sinkerball pitcher only. That ludicrous because if a pitcher can get outs with groundouts, strike outs, or flyouts, the bottom line is he gets outs. There are days when a sinker ball pitcher gives up plenty of singles/doubles, etc and gets rocked, and plenty of days where he will give up the long ball as well. The same goes for any pitcher.

  9. Griffin Says:

Jack, I think you’re right about a quality pitcher being a quality pitcher. Sometimes I think that what people mean to say is that they’d rather have a mediocre groundball pitcher over a mediocre flyball pitcher. But you’re right, talent is talent and Drabek is shaping up to be a good one.

  10. Griffin Says:

I found this on Baseball Prospectus. It’s a scout’s view of Brad Penny:

“He’s definitely not the same pitcher he was a couple of years ago. He has lost a few ticks on his fastball and his pitches don’t have the same life anymore. He’s still serviceable, but he used to be really good.”

  11. Don M Says:

Why do the Phillies love fat, out-of-shape pitchers..?

and don’t tell me that ROUND is a shape

Lets bring back Vicente Padilla.. the Rangers are letting him go i hear

  12. Griffin Says:

I could see Padilla to the Mets.

  13. Kennedy Says:

Yea, I know they wouldn’t trade Happ, he looks like a solid 3 at worst, and he’s got years of arbitration left. That means he wont be a FA til 2015. Not the kind of player you’d trade for a Jason Marquis rental (or even a Bedard rental).

  14. Griffin Says:

Padilla could team up in Queens with Nelson Figueroa. I think Omar Daal is a custodian at Citi Field.

  15. Kennedy Says:

Or for the privilege of overpaying Roy Oswalt for that matter

  16. mike Says:

That Buster Olney story is a bunch of crap. I have heard from more than one reliable source that the phillies have no interest in penny, at any price, same for peavy[because of contract concerns].

  17. Richie Says:

I think you might see Tommy Glavine back with the Mets. I’d rather them sign Glavine then Padilla, I can see Padilla drilling Utley or something and causing trouble he is a real nut job!!

  18. Bruce Says:

Tom Glavine is available. He asked for and got his release from the Braves. However, there is no room in the Phillies’ stellar rotation of Hamels, Blanton, Moyer, Happ and Bastardo (?). Likely Glavine could arouse some attention with the Mets, his previous employer before rejoining the Braves.

This is the latest from Baseballdigest. It’s an interested read to say the least.

I’m fine with Moyer for now, but another over the hill soft-tossing lefty in our rotation would not sit well with me.

  20. Griffin Says:

Mets are already losing again today 2-0 in the 1st

  21. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

they were topping Drabek at 99 last night..

this kid is gonna be a f’n rock star

  22. JeffS Says:

Amaro and Dallas Green were both in Reading to watch. I wonder if they are trying to convince themselves not to trade him, or whether they are pondering bringing him all the way up this year, yet.

  23. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

he won’t hit Philly this year unless something major happens.

but 3-4 starts like that in AA…you’ll see him in an Iron Pigs jersey before the year is done.

there is no way he is traded. none. Ruben was there for a reason to see how he did…and he went 7 shutout innings and hit 99…

you only trade him if it lands you Albert Pujols…which would never happen, so you never trade him

his Reading debut was better than that of King Cole’s

  24. JeffS Says:

If I remember right, Cole’s debut was a total disaster in AA. Wouldn’t take much to be better than that was. Drabek did far better than I could have expected.

  25. Jeff of Nova Says:

    Bring up Drabek!!!!

    jk excited about him
