Ruiz Shows Offense In Rehab Start; Kendrick Strong
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, May 01, 2009 10:35 AM
Carlos Ruiz finished 2-for-3 with a two-RBI double in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 4-2 win Thursday over Toledo. It was his first appearance at catcher since being placed on the 15-day disabled list for an abdomen injury.
Kyle Kendrick, starting the game, gave up just three hits and two walks in six innings, striking out four. His 2009 ERA is now at 2.77.

The numbers look fine but face it, if we have to go digging for Kyle Kendrick, there is probably a damn convincing reason – here’s hoping that we do not have to make any moves for our starters (perhaps the Ho experiment is at an end?) other than Happ. Joe really needs to pitch a good game or 3 or 4 –
Lots of offense this series, hold tight!

Phils will get fired up for the Muts. Kendrick pitchign well in AAA is exactly what he needed.
May 1st, 2009 at 11:27 am
Good to hear that Kendrick has knuckled down.
May 1st, 2009 at 11:30 am
Hey Tim, don’t mean to correct you but it was the Toledo Mudhens, not the Norfolk Tide.
May 1st, 2009 at 11:41 am
Thanks.
May 1st, 2009 at 11:48 am
If Kendrick continues to do well, he should be first in line for any future call up by the Phillies. His two years of experience in the Majors also gives him that added avantage.

And the funiest post of the season so far, goes to…
BRUCE! That was a good one about Kendrick! Made me laugh out loud!
Tim , I couldn’t comment on that POST from the NY Baseball Today interview… is that dude Ted Berg or whatever his name is.. is he serious? He looks like he’s doing a bad impression of a real newscaster
May 1st, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Do we know if Kendrick is throwing the changeup? succesful?
May 1st, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Don~ I’m glad you enjoyed my post and perhaps made your day. (chuckles)
If Kendrick has made the necessary adjustments and is consistent with command and location of pitches, then logically Manual and Dubee would lean toward him for call up. As previously posted, his two years in the majors AND 21 wins does count for something. Manual has stated in the past that he expects Kendrick to make improvements and return as an effective starter when needed.
Have a cheerful day Don.

I think this is so good for Ruiz, not only rehabbing but maybe getting a change to get good swings on the ball from AAA pitchers.
Hope when Ruiz comes back he can catch fire with the bat!
May 1st, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Of course Manuel is going to say that.. you wouldn’t ever hear them admit that they don’t think Kendrick can cut it at the Major League level
Kendrick has 21 wins.. but that is due more to lots of run support than his good pitching.. his career ERA is 4.78, career WHIP 1.46 (walks + hits per Innings Pitched) and opponents have a .294 batting average against him..
I see Kendrick as spot-starter, or a long reliever for some team down the line, but I highly doubt he’s ever part of a Starting Rotation for a winning baseball team.. maybe he can hook on as a #4 or #5 with the Pirates or Padres, etc.. but they’d bring up Carrasco before Kendrick if it was for any real stretch of time
May 1st, 2009 at 12:44 pm
that might make me sound like I’m expecting too much from our pitchers, but Im really not.. I just want pitchers to give you a solid chance to win the game.
And I really think that Kendrick’s win total is boosted from our strong offense when he was on the mound.. and great defense behind him.. but somewhere along the line his sinker stopped sinking, and he started getting hit too hard. .
He’s one of those guys where a Change-of-Scenery might be best.. a trip to St. Louis might make him the next Kyle Lohse!
May 1st, 2009 at 1:00 pm
or Gavin Floyd…
May 1st, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Or Joel Pineiro, he may learn how to throw that sinker effectively. He’s pitching well for LHV but from what I hear he throws too many pitches per inning which doesn’t allow him to last long into games.
May 1st, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Don~ His 2 yr career ERA of 4.78 may not looked good but also a little misleading. One needs to take a closer look. True he had a lot of run support and requires alert defense as he pitched to contact when his sinker is working. His first year (5th in ROY voting), his ERA was 3.87 for an outstanding 10-4 record. The second year (2008), in looking at his splits, he started off effectively in the 1st half..8-3 record with 4.47 ERA. After June (3-1; 4.08 ERA), he began to have his problems with command and location of his “out” pitch, the sinker. The second half of that season he struggled for a 3-6 record with a 7.59 ERA in only 51.0 innings pitched. It is that portion of the season unfortunately that fans when down on him so intensely.
Now we read some good news of Kendrick coming around with effective outing(s) and showing command of his sinker. As I pointed out, he will need to show more of the same with positive results in the months ahead to be the candidate for first call up.
May 1st, 2009 at 2:43 pm
One of the main things I read about Kendrick was that he was simply failing to adjust to hitters.. he kept the same approach every at-bat, and once they saw him pitch enough times, he got rocked.
That stubbourn approach, combined with the lack of a solid “out pitch” means trouble in the Major Leagues..
I’d like nothing more than for Kendrick to translate his current AAA numbers into success at this level.. but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I WANT REVENGE is favored for all the right reasons.. bet him with a long-shot 2nd place horse to win some money I’m liking PAPA CLEM at 20-1, and HOLD ME BACK at 15-1 as surprise horses.. anyone have any input, on those anti-fillies (males)
