Minor Leagues: Worley’s Wizardry Continues In Reading

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, May 11, 2009 01:30 PM

WorleyHere’s a quick primer on right-handed pitcher Vance Worley: The third-round pick of the Phillies in last year’s draft, the 21-year-old Californian carries excellent control and a few average or above-average breaking pitches.

That in mind, Worley is currently 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA in six starts for the Reading Phillies. He has struck out 34 against walking just nine. This after spending his 2008 campaign with Williamsport (two games) and Lakewood (11 games).

Worley’s best start was yesterday against the Altoona Curve. In eight innings he allowed one run (an eighth-inning home run) on three hits while striking out six. A reader report at Phuture Phillies relayed that Worley is throwing a cutter, slider and turtle-slow curve, mixing in a fastball that he’ll throw high with two strikes (a la Joe Blanton). Does a pitcher with prominent breaking stuff translate to major league success? It’s rare, but considering Worley’s numbers so far, there’s hope yet.

Totally unrelated, but I wanted to point out the following stat line of Pat Burrell:

    .250 / 1 HR / 17 RBI / .315 SLG / .664 OPS

Sad to see him floundering so much. I think we’re all lucky how things turned out with his replacement…

Burrell couldn’t have gotten out of town any quicker glad to see him go. Ibanez circles him in both defense and batting. The man has made catches on balls burrell never would have caught up with.

I must be the worst baseball fan in this city. I couldn’t say what Justin said about Burrell he gave it his all .never dog ed it or complained. A true professional. He never became what a team thinks the number one player in the draft should be, but he never left anything on the field. To me it was a pleasure to watch him. Better than watching a guy like eaton getting his paycheck and not caring or a lito sheppard mad about his contract and letting players run by him.

To stay ON topic of Tim’s blog, the given description of Worley mixing in a fastball thrown high for strikes reminds me of a former Phillie favorite, Randy Wolf (now pitching successfully for Dodgers). Wolf never ceases to amazed me with his sneaky fastball for high strikes. He is able to be effective with it by changing speeds on his pitches.

I want pitches that throw a fastball and changeup. its the deadliest combo a pitcher can have. i hate when pitchers rely on there breaking ball a lot, BRETT MYERS. the key is to keep the ball low and if you can throw in a change up with an above average fastball that great.
