Minor Leagues: Carrasco Vs. Willis

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, May 02, 2009 11:30 AM

Minor League notes from the night that was:

  • The classic battle between Carlos Carrasco and Dontrelle Willis was a wash, with Carrasco’s Lehigh Valley defeating Willis’ Toledo 6-5. Carrasco surrendered all five runs in 4.1 innings, striking out eight and giving up a home run. Offensively, Jason Donald went 3-for-4, and John Mayberry Jr. went 1-for-3. They’re hitting .267 and .271, respectively.
  • Reading lost 4-2 to Harrisburg, as Antonio Bastardo — back in the rotation — lasted four innings, giving up three runs. Mike Zagurski pitched a scoreless inning — the lefty hasn’t given up a run in five minor league frames. The offense is looking better lately, led by Michael Taylor, who is hitting .319 with three home runs. His 11 strikeouts in 19 games isn’t too high, either.
  • Clearwater defeated Daytona, 5-3. Kyle Drabek gave up two runs in five innings, striking out six. Dominic Brown — hitting .299 — went 2-for-4 in the win.
  • Lakewood lost, 6-3, to Hickory. Tyler Cloyd struggled, giving up six runs and 11 hits in six innings. Zach Collier went 2-for-4 with a double; he’s hitting .225 this season.

Phils need to stop yo-yoing Bastardo most pitchers have problems with it in the majors let alone being thrown from setup man to starter in the minors. Leave him as a reliever for god sake.

looks like Zagurski could be making an appearance in the bigs again shortly. i wouldn’t mind that. he could definitely make a nice contribution to a bullpen that is already being worn out in the early going

  3. Justin Says:

Absolutely rediculous that the Phils sent Marson down instead of Coste, the worst player aside from Cairo on this team, Cairo has an excuse, he’s never used. Coste has been used exclusively since Ruiz went down and has been absolutely dreadful since the end of the regular season last year, through the playoffs and world series to now. Get him in the minors or something because Marson has been seeing the ball well and can learn a helluva lot more from Ruiz than from Coste.

Poor willis i feel bad for him.

  5. clktwr14 Says:

Michael N, I too feel bad for him in that picture he looks mental done, he needs to take a break from the game, get his passion back for it, he doesn;t even look like the same guy, who pitched for the Fish so few years back.

  6. Dan Says:

Willis just looks miserable in this picture
