Minor Leagues: Pitching Dominant In Tuesday’s Action

Despite the pitching woes with the big club, there’s a full-scale pitching revolution in the minor leagues. And Jason Knapp has now taken the reins.
Lakewood: Knapp was flat out scorching, throwing seven innings of one-hit ball while whiffing 14 and walking one. The 14 Ks tied a franchise record. The BlueClaws lost.
Lehigh Valley: Carlos Carrasco took the hill yesterday against Syracuse and pitched very well. His final line: 7 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 10 K, BB. He was throwing a no-hitter until the seventh inning, but got burned by Ryan Langerhans and Seth Bynum. The IronPigs did lose the game.
Reading: Tyson Brummett went 7.2 innings, giving up a run on five hits. He struck out five and walked none. In relief, Antonio Bastardo threw 1.1 scoreless inning. The R-Phils won, 3-1.
Clearwater: Then there’s Kyle Drabek. Currently stunning the Florida State League, the former first-round draft pick stepped in during the second inning (Mike Zagurski opened the game with a scoreless inning) and slung straight hash for 6.2 frames. He gave up no runs, four hits and two walks while striking out 10. Drabek is 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA, 26 strikeouts and five walks.

As a note: I could probably name 15 pitchers in our system who could project to the majors. That’s tough to do with any franchise.

So, Brummett to AAA and Stutes/Drabek/Knapp to AA by seasons end? I think thats entirely possible. Theyve definitely got some arms coming up through the system. Like I said, the future of this rotation looks bright. And, there are a few guys they could afford to package in a trade for filling quality Major League need if one arises…

its so great seeing all this young pitching talent evolving in front of out eyes. what were the phillies doing all this time from the late 80’s till early 2000. We finally have a good farm system. this is just great.

Nice high school photo of Knapp.
Good to see that North Hunterdon HS hasn’t changed their uniforms since I played against them in 1991-1995.

Carrasco and Knapp are in the same boat that they’re pitching very well with very little offense behind them. Hard to be down on either of their records just have to go by the stats that show the k’s and era to show how good they are rather than read the Win Loss alone.

This is very encouraging. Nobody is going to like this, but some of these prospects (Donald,Carassco,Knapp,Drabek,Masron) could help us to land a guy like Halladay.

Geoff, there not going to rush knapp through that fast. he might make it to clearwater before years end. the scouting report on knapp is a big fastball, less refined secondary pitches and funky delivery. they’ll probably want him to work all that out before they start rushing him through, and he’s only 18 so they probably want to take there time with him. i think they’ll move drabek up with the warm wheather, late may to early june.

It’s really great to have this young pitching talent. It will help build a very solid foundation for the future.
I was wondering about Scott Mathieson – he was a great prospect 3 years ago but I guess he’s had more than his share of injury problems since then.

two tj. i think he’s in extended spring training rehabbing. he might make an apperance late in the season.

reddeath (interesting name…?) i agree about knapp, whats the hurry? unless he is absolutely lights out there’s no need to hurry him… the only way he gets rushed through is because he will earn it, not because the phils need it… which is a huge testament to what this (so often hated) front office has done to repair the once unhealable wounds that was our farm system… now with this overabundance of pitching, and guys like, brown, marson, donald, d’armaud amongst others, they are looking like one of the BETTER farm teams around, which is unheard of for those of us who can look back in time only a few years…! even if there is a big league need at pitcher some point throughout the season, we have a few guys who can step in (happ/carrasco/park) without having to test an unproven arm… what a great spot to be in if you are the phils, or even just a phils phan like us… i (in an earlier post) compared these phuture phils to what the flyers have in giroux/jvr/sbisa added on top of their core of youngsters richards/carter… if we keep this up then we should be in contention for many years even after our immediate core of (the entire infield) are gone due to age or teamswitches… the phuture looks bright here, so that show was right on when they said, “it’s always sunny in philadelphia” – i know i know, it’s a great show.

Great to see we have all of these arms. I remember how exciting it was when myers and hamels were called up and hope to have that excitement for these guys in the next couple of years. Now that I think of it, we are probably days away from the “seya pal” comment to Cole Hamels and call up Knapp.
April 22nd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Well ovviously not. But I remember that excitement too though. If Hamels continues to struggle then maybe he should skip a start or something like that to rest or smetimes repetition will get him out of it. Hed have to be obviously injured or get lit up like 5 times in a row for the Phillies to put him on the DL…

Can’t wait for the day that our rotation resembles what they have down in Florida, the difference here is that we’ll get to keep ours after Arb, Florida just ships them out and rebuilds. You have to give them credit for what they’ve done though.
April 22nd, 2009 at 3:28 pm
I’m excited that we have some of these guys in our system that sound like the real deal. Let’s just hope the Phils don’t let them throw their best games in the minors (Tyler Greene anyone?).
April 22nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Skipping a Hamels start is the opposite of what he needs. Now that we are almost 100% sure he isn’t currently injured, the kid just needs work. 7+ inning in ST isn’t enough to kick start a season. There have been several articles on a myriad of different blogs/websites concluding this is a normal April (from a velocity standpoint) for Hamels.

Seya Pal… the stuff that dreams are made of.
I’ll be at the game t’night. I need a good chant for Ryan Braun (our seats are a few rows back in left field)… thoughts?

I think Drabek is probably the guy with the most upside here. His arm is fantastic, and he fell on draft day mostly because of character issues, which haven’t been an issue with him, (yet). Should be real interesting to see if we can eventually fill a rotation with Hamels, Carrasco, Happ, Drabek, and insert pitcher here
April 22nd, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Let’s insert Knapp. He could be ready in 3 years maybe. I like the sound of that rotation.
April 22nd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I was wondering when you were going to post this…I’m really looking forward to seeing Carrasco being called up this season. If the rotation doesn’t make some adjustments and continues to give up as many runs like they been doing, than Carrasco WILL get called up. Personally I predict Myers will be the first one to fold this season, as he normally does each season.
April 22nd, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Myers first to fold? Personally he has looked the best out of everyone this year. He has the stuff it is just getting his head straight. My prediction is Happ takes Park’s spot in June. Carrasco gets some work from a DL trip by a starter and is in the rotation next year. Drabek will be Lidge’s predecessor.

Someone posted earlier about Mathieson. Does anyone have an update on him?
April 22nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
i’m sorry but whats with all this moving drabek to the pen. an arm that good you wanna max his value by putting him in the rotation. if anyone is going to the pen is most likely knapp because of his herky jerky mechanics. they have a couple of intresting bullpen guys in the minors too. mainly schwimmer, rosenberg, bastardo and de fratus is another guy i like.

matheison is rehabbing his second tommy john surgery in florida
April 22nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Mathieson may throw some twards the end of the summer, but he has had two Tommy John Surgeries Ry.
April 23rd, 2009 at 12:22 am
Myers does have the lowest era among the 5 starters (although there ALL high eras), but he’s already given up, what? 7? 8 long balls so far? I agree Happ will definitely take over for Park…But let’s be honest here…Myers stunk it up early last season too, and they sent him down to the minors, and he came back with his A-game. This is just an early guess on my part however…Honestly I pray that I’m wrong with Myers here. He really needs to work on his control if he plans to stick around.

i’m very excited about drabek. i can already imagine a rotation including cole hamels, drabek, carrasco , and Happ.
