Minor Leagues: Carrasco Dazzles In First Start

Carlos Carrasco is the big name, but really, a few Phillies prospects had encouraging starts to the 2009 season in the minors.
- First, Mr. Carrasco surrendered just four hits over six innings, striking out four and walking none. He threw 60 of his 85 pitches for strikes, inducing eight ground outs to six fly outs. The IronPigs lost in 11 innings to Scranton-Wilkes Barre, but Jason Donald had two hits. Mike Koplove picked up the loss, while Gary Majewski threw two scoreless innings.
- In Reading, Joe Savery made his first start and simply shut down Harrisburg. He gave up a solo home run, but struck out eight in six innings while allowing four hits. The Phils won with a two-run eight-inning rally sparked by Michael Taylor and Brian Stavisky (each 2-for-4).
- The Clearwater Threshers won 10-7 over Dunedin. Drew Naylor gave up two earned runs in five innings, but the offense broke out, with Joel Naughton collecting two hits and Matthew Rizzotti getting three hits. One of Naughton’s was a grand slam. Dominic Brown and Freddy Galvis each scored twice.
- Lakewood lost to Delmarva, 3-1, as Jason Knapp gave up two earned in 5.2 innings. Still, he struck out 10. Jim Murphy added two hits and second baseman Jesus Villegas Andino homered.

I listened to the Pigs game and was very encouraged by Carrasco. Nice to hear some of the other guys had nice starts in the farm system.

I hope for the sake of the fans for their team, the Pigs, will be able to enjoy a winning season at last. Last season, was a nightmare for those who wanted to see quality of performance go hand in hand with family entertainment.

I am looking forward to seeing Reading Phillies and the prospects when they play in Trenton, NJ’s Waterfront Park, the home of Trenton Thunder, a double A affiliate of the Yankees organization. It’s in my neck of the woods.

I saw Carrasco last night, went up to the game. His breaking stuff was nasty, his fastball moved. I wouldn’t rush him up too quickly, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s up this year. If he learns to pitch (as opposed to just throwing) this year, he’s going to be outstanding, fast.

Carrasco was straight up dealing last night, hopefully tonight Drew Carpenter returns to his 07 form and gets the IronPigs to their 1st win of the season.

Great game by Savery last night. He really took control early in the game and was consistently ahead of the batters. His command was outstanding, as evidenced by his 8K’s against 1 IBB.
Reading didn’t hit much last night, with Taylor and Stavinsky (Sp) each going 2/4 with 1 RBI a piece. Mahar lead off the 2 run 8th with a single. He advanced to second on Berry’s sac bunt, and scored on Taylors RBI single. Stavinsky then drove in Harmon, who walked after Berry’s sac bunt.
Bastardo finished the game with a scoreless 8th and 9th, often hitting 92-94 on the radar gun. He was aided by a game ending 6-4-3 double play.
