100 Greatest Phillies: 51 – Tony Gonzalez

Tony Gonzalez
Outfielder
1960-1968

Career w/Phillies: .295 AVG / 77 HR / 438 RBI / 68 SB

An above-average center fielder who patrolled the Phillies outfield through much of the 1960s, Tony Gonzalez was the first Latin star in Philadelphia baseball. The Cuban came from Cincinnati in a trade for Wally Post, Harry Anderson and Fred Hopke, and didn’t disappoint. He recorded a career-high 20 home runs in 1962, then hit a career-high .339 in 1967, second in the National League to Roberto Clemente. He finished in the top 30 of MVP voting three times, including 1963, when he hit .306 and slugged .436. A good fielder, he had a slightly above-average arm and threw out 10 runners or more twice during his Phillie career.

Comment: One of the better outfielders in team history, Gonzalez is a fine precursor to the speedy, slick-hitting center fielders that proceeded him – mainly Garry Maddox, Lenny Dykstra and Shane Victorino. And face it, dude looked pretty cool in those old-school pinstripe uniforms.

Gonzalez went almost two whole seasons without an error in the 60’s. Pretty damn good.

one of the first guys. if not the first guy with a little league helmet at bat. really gokeep upod hitter who hardly ever pulled the ball, always swung late and hit line driv es, also a great fielder.taken by san diego in the 69 expansion draft. keep up the good work tim.

One of my early Phillie faves. Phils were rarely on tv in the early 60’s so I don’t remember how he hit. He looked cool though. I loved reading and collecting his baseball cards. Wish I still had them. I was waiting to see where he would be on the list. Tim, this list is a blast!

  6. Greg V. Says:

Is Paul Abbot making this list or what?

  7. I know Sal.. Says:

was he better than Pete Rose?

  8. Hope SE Says:

Known as “Little dynamite” back when. He wasn’t very big, but had good power.

  9. Rich Says:

My favorite Phillie as a kid, in fact he was in the first pack of baseball cards I ever opened. 1964 Topps. Good line drive hitter, decent speed, solid outfielder. Had surprising power early in his career.

  10. Lew Walton Says:

A real cool player from the sixties. He gave maximum effort. Whenever a play or hit was possible, he tried to make it. Wonder where Tony G is today. He was a credit to baseball.

  11. Bill Master Says:

Tony was our neighbor in Philadelphia and was friends of my parents. I still have an autographed picture of him. Does anyone know where he is these days or where you can write to him?

  12. Casey Says:

He lives in Coral Gables, FL. Check white pages. Good Luck.
