100 Greatest Phillies: 66 – John Titus

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, January 20, 2009 08:51 PM

John Titus
Outfielder
1903-1912

Career w/Phillies: .278 AVG / 31 HR / 475 RBI / 131 SB

In the age of poor offense, John Titus was one of the better hitters in the game. With an on-base percentage of .373 and a slugging percentage of .385, Titus was a tough out in those times, and caused some havoc on the basepaths. He was consistently among the top 10 in walks, doubles, hit by pitches and runs created. And hey, he had one of the coolest names in the game.

Comment: Of course, it’s a shame his name didn’t quite fit his hitting persona. But Titus was a pretty good player, an above-average hitter for much of his career.
